- At his one-year doctor appointment he was 29 1/2 inches (48%), 25lbs 1oz (80%), and his head was 48cm (70%)
- Caden turned one and he had 2 birthday parties: one in Tallahassee and one in FWB.
-Since his birthday Caden has been enjoying his new toys...
- Caden started walking one week before his first birthday. He took his first few steps on a Friday and by Monday was practically running around.
- Caden began eating solid foods right after his first birthday. This was a accomplishment because for months he was gagging himself when he ate it. We kept trying and we finally figured out that he did not like solid food that was mixed with pureed. If we gave him a piece of food he knew he had to chew he did better. The mums cookies also helped.
- Caden has not been in daycare since the end of March. We were given less than one week notice about a situation we were uncomfortable with at the at-home daycare he was going to. So, we pulled him out. It's been hard, but we have been able to work around each other's schedules and mom came over a couple times to help. After scrambling to visit a lot of daycares, getting recommendations, and a lot of talking and prayer, we have decided to put him in the daycare at a methodist church. It's really nice, they offer part-time and it is near my work. They usually don't start until 18 months (which is October 2 for him), but they are going to let him start in August. This works out perfect because Erick's grad assistant was able to watch him in May and one of my technicians in June and July. I am worried how he will transition back, though.
- Women's basketball made it to the second round of the NCAA tournament.
- Men's basketball made it to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament. Erick attended the final game for them in San Antonio, TX. Very convenient since my oldest nephew, Michael, was in tech school there. Well, one of the players on FSU's team was in the Air Force and so ESPN and everyone was making a big deal about it. He was a high school drop out that got his GED and joined the military. One day his sergeant asked him if he had ever played basketball, when he replied "no" his sergeant said "well, you do now." Six years later and he's playing for FSU at the Elite 8... inspiring. Anyways, the Command Chief Master Sergeant for all 3 bases in San Antonio found out and presented the team with Ari Force coins. Erick struck up a conversation with him and mentioned his nephew was in tech school there and he was going to try to see him. Well, the Chief ended up sending somebody to pick Erick up the next day and take him to where Michael was. Erick got to watch some of the guys at the rifle range. Then, they called and told Erick that Michael could attend the game and could stay at the hotel with Erick that night. This was awesome since Michael's squadron hadn't even earned the privilege to go off base yet since they were only a couple weeks in. It was a neat experience for both Michael and Erick.
- Our nephew Elijah came for an unexpected visit for a couple days. Elijah is Erick's brother Dirk's baby. He was a really good baby and I think Caden had fun with him.
- Caden went to the beach for the first time. I was scared he was going to try to eat the sand. He did. He was playing with his hands and all of a sudden he bent down and stuck his face in the sand with his mouth open. He loved playing in the sand and really wanted to walk up to the water. When he got there he just sort of froze.
- We worked on the yard like crazy in April/May. We laid some new sod and redid our front bed in front of the house. We also had to get new front porch columns and railing due to rot.
Before:
- We went to the Gulfarium in FWB.
- We took a trip up to the Boswell's farm with Unc and Pankey.
- The community college basketball coach from back home passed away as a result of the brain tumor he was diagnosed with last August. He really meant a lot to Erick. There was a great amount of people that attended his funeral and they were able to play the testimony he gave at the church after he was diagnosed. It was a really nice service. Something else that was neat happened... Erick has been asking for more help at work since he started (you have often heard me complain about his working 7 days per week during the season). Well about 3 weeks before the funeral he was given the go-ahead to start looking for another GA. When we got to the viewing, we waited in line for 1 hour and were almost to the coach's wife when Erick asked me if I minded if we sat and waited until the end because he was a little choked up and did not feel ready to talk to her. So, we went and sat in the hall. While we were waiting I overheard coach's oldest son (he has 3 kids, the oldest already graduated college, the middle son was taking a break, and the daughter is at USF) talking about how his brother was trying to get back into school, but they couldn't afford it right now and that one of coach's old assistants was trying to get him a scholarship somewhere. At that moment it hit me and I looked at Erick, he was looking for a new assistant and it was a full scholarship position and the coach's son needed help with school! It was such an amazing blessing in so many ways. Erick had been trying to think of a way to help the family out since coach was diagnosed. It's also a full circle moment since coach gave Erick a scholarship and got him one for MSU as well. It is just such an awesome example of God's timing and how amazing He is.
- We had a visit from our friends-Michael, Meghan, Justin and Jessica.
- Caden had salmonella poisoning 2 weeks ago. Poor little guy had diarrhea and didn't eat for 3 days. He lost weight but has already gained it back. The only source we could figure was eggs somehow (even though we are very careful to wash our hands when handling them). We have since found out that there are some brands that have pasteurized eggs that eliminate this risk. We have switched.
-Caden has his first dentist appointment. Ever since his first top front tooth started coming in it had a yellow spot at the bottom. The same thing for his second top front tooth. His pediatrician didn't know what it was so she referred us to the dentist. It is tooth decay. The dentist said it is from his acid reflux, but he's not worried about it because it is at the bottom of his teeth and far from the nerve. Also, it shouldn't get worse since his reflux is under control and most decay occurs along the gum line where plaque builds up.
- Caden and I took Erick to a Braves game (Caden's first) for Father's Day. Unfortunately, there was a 2hr 15min rain delay and we ended up having to leave early to get back to Tallahassee. But Caden did amazing for being at the stadium for a total of 5 hrs! He actually did pretty well on the whole trip. Each trip is a learning experience and this one was no different. He is sorta over sleeping in the pack-n-play and wasn't having any part of the hotel's port-a-crib, so he ended up sleeping between me and Erick in the king bed. He was by Erick the first night and me the second and neither of us got any sleep on our respective nights. That boy is all over the place when he sleeps!! By the way, we are total fans of the Priceline "name your own price" now. Erick found a blog that tells you how to work it. We got a 4 star $280/night hotel room for $75/night! It was nice!
- Caden updates:
He loves being chased around the couch in the living room.
He loves playing in the sprinkler. When we go outside he walks up to it and points to it.
He's still neutral about the pool and for the most part could care less about it. Maybe he will like it more next year.
He likes Handy Manny now and less of Mickey Mouse. In fact, when Pete the giant is on Mickey he seems to get a little scared.
His favorite toys are these little plastic animals with wheels passed on from Jackson. He carries them around and drives them on everything, including us.
He still loves pushing around his big toys with wheels.
He hasn't attached to it, but he seems partial towards a stuffed dog he calls "doggy"
He still enjoys walks and just chills during them.
He likes eggs, meat sticks, and fruit.
He was eating veggies great but recently decided he doesn't like them. I've heard they go through those stages.
He doesn't really seem to care about sweets.
He loves milk! (wonder where he gets that from)
He has started temper tantrums. Full out throwing himself on the ground crying when he wants something. We can usually distract him away from them.
He goes through stages where he cries when he is put to bed. We are in that stage now.
He has fallen quite a bit and has had his first goose egg and skinned up his knees a couple times.
He sometimes gets giggly before bed. Sometimes just laughing at nothing.
He gets excited when I come in from work and runs up to me and gives me a hug. This is my favorite thing.
We think he calls both of us Daddy. But he clearly knows Erick is "Daddy."
We think he can sign more (we're working on it)
He waves "hi" and "bye".
He shakes his head and says "no,no"
He puts his hands up in the air when we ask him a question like "i don't know"
He flirts and gets shy around strangers.
He can say ball, hi, bye, doggy, he roars when we ask him what a lion says.
He is fully on the sippy cup
We have a thing he loves to do where we bump heads and say boom
He does this new thing where he covers his mouth sometimes when he laughs. I have no idea where he got it from.
